„Der Tübinger Autor Rolf Vollmann, Jahrgang 1934, hat sich einen Namen als ebenso gelehrter wie mitreißender Ausleger und Nacherzähler literarischer Werke gemacht, allen voran mit seinem „Roman-Verführer“ unter dem Titel „Die wunderbaren Falschmünzer“ oder auch mit dem Kompendium „Shakespeares Arche“, einer Art erzähltes Lexikon der Stücke und Figuren des englischen Autors. 
Mit dem „Frauenkatalog“ knüpft Vollmann nach langer Pause in gewisser Weise daran an. In einer ausgedehnten Begehung des fiktiven Reichs von König Artus werden Szenen und Konstellationen aus den mittelalterlichen Romanen „Erec“, „Iwein“, „Parzival“, „Titurel“ und „Willehalm“, aus dem „Eneasroman“ und dem „Prosalancelot“ beleuchtet, allerdings als ein Tableau, das auch entlegene Dinge erzählend miteinander verknüpft, das die Stoffe auflöst und neu zusammensetzt und an die Stellen isolierter Beobachtungen den mäandernden Überblick setzt.“
